About the Area: The department of Petén, a remote tropical wilderness sandwiched between Mexico and Belize, features some of the most dramatic archaeological ruins in Latin America. Tikal, with its massive temples and rainforest environment, overshadows a series of near equally-impressive ruins. Uaxactun, Mirador, and Yaxhá are all awe-inspiring, though few tourists venture to them.
