About the Area: The Northern Highlands of Guatemala, particularly the Ixil Region, offer beautiful hiking and other off-the-beaten-track opportunities. It's not for all tourists, but those who dare to go are never let down, enamored by the region's culture, history, and beauty.
White adobe walls and cobbled streets adorn the ancient heart of this remote mountain village. Indigenous culture still lives and thrives in the villages and forests which surround this beautiful "off the beaten track" mountain getaway. Although Nebaj and the surrounding villages all experienced great violence and hardship during the Guatemalan civil conflict, the town is now a safe place where foreigners can walk around without the uneasiness that one often feels in larger Guatemalan cities. Nebaj´s native inhabitants, the Ixiles, are an incredibly kind and warm-hearted people. In fact, walking through town on a typical morning one is likely to be greeted with more "Buenos Días" than he or she can count.
Nebaj's turbulent recent history has also made the area a hot-bed of development activity, and a large number of international development organizations work in and around the area. This makes for an exciting atmosphere where people from all over the world can work, volunteer, and form strong friendships with local people. Getting there: Shuttles to Nebaj can be arranged through a few travel agencies throughout the country, but to get to Nebaj independently, hop on a bus to Santa Cruz del Quiché from Guatemala City or the Pan-American highway. Once in Quiché, look for a bus or van to Nebaj at the bus terminal. One can get to Nebaj from Guatemala City in 5-7 hours.
